Can't place the saddle? The Alfa Romeo jersey though, I think I remember Shawn Wallace winning Pawtucket in one of those. Remember that race? Remember the one lane hay canyon down the far end? I was warming up on the course in 89 when they announced Lemond had won the tour a second time.

Pawtucket was the home race. I think Gary Dalton was behind it.

I was afraid that I'd miss the corner and hit the scallop shell across teh road. Either that or whack my head on the pole at that corner. I hated that race.

I remember the Alfa team at some
crit in Harvard Square. All I heard was that they were all juiced up. I think they dissapeared after that year.

Bruce Donaghy, Mark Whitehead, maybe. I done remember Wallace.

Harvard Square was the Wheat Thins. I have tons of pics with the local boys up against Wheaties, Schwinn, etc. Broznowski, Englemann, Shapiro, etc.

Shawn Wallace came later, in the Graeme Miller era. I saw his name come up on a blog recently, so he is still around, coaching or something. I don't remember if it was Pawtucket or Lowell, but I remember he lapped the field, maybe with Jeff Slack or Graeme, but then won.

I also remember at Pawtucket, a black guy from NYC, Charlie something or other, somehow ended up in no man's land off the back by himself. He stayed in though, and did not get lapped. Dick Ring got the crowd going and rounded up a Lanterne Rouge prime for him. I think he got over $200. We just don't have crits like that anymore. Last year even Fitchburg was like a ghost town compared to days of old.

Now I remember. It was Tour of Schenectady. Sort of like Pawtucket except without the hill. It also had some really scary homeless panhandlers (gave the guy a buck and told him to head to Boston, where we take better care of those folks) as well as OTB on the first corner, which was a riot. I think it was Slack who was with him.
